Choosing People to Play a Role at Your Wedding

It is a great honour to participate in a wedding and support the bride and groom through the most special day of their life. I am sure you will have lots of friends and family who would like to play a role in your wedding. So it’s important to know what roles are out there so you can fill them with the appropriate people.

Wedding Roles:

Maid or Matron of Honour: She assists with the pre-wedding planing and helps arrange the bridal shower. She plays a similar role to the best man -but for the bride. She helps the bride get ready on the wedding day and provides her with support on the day.

The Best Man: Choosing a best man can be a difficult task. With lots of close friends and family, it may be hard to choose the person for your greatest honour. Many people choose a best friend or close family relative like a brother or uncle. Keeping it in the family, helps you avoid playing favourites with your friends. If it is really difficult to choose, make your own rules. Its your wedding after all. There is no reason why you cannot choose more than one person to share the honour. Simply split the duties between the people. The best man typically accompanies the groom to the wedding ceremony. He may act as the ring bearer. It is common for the best man to sign the wedding certificate. He makes a speech to the bride and groom and supports the groom with the wedding preparations.

The Brides Maids: The ladies have it easier. You can choose as many brides maids as you like. The number of brides maids you choose will depend on the number of guests at your wedding. A very large bridal party might be inappropriate for a small wedding because the size of the bridal party might be disproportionate to the number of guests. A word of advice is to choose friends or family who you really get along with. People who will be flexible enough to accommodate your plans. Choose the people who will make the day special. The bridesmaids will walk down the aisle before the bride.

Groomsmen: They play the same role as the bridesmaids. They walk down the aisle as part of the grooms party.

Master of Ceremonies: This is an honourable role. The master of ceremonies co-ordinates the sequence of events at the wedding. He welcomes the guests, introduces the speeches, meals, the dancing, the cake cutting or any other special events in your wedding plan.

The Ring Bearer: As the name suggests carries the rings on a pillow down the aisle. Often the best man is chosen to keep the rings.

Ushers: Helps coordinate the movement of your guests. One usher for every 50 guests is recommended.

There are lots of roles to go around. So share the honour with all you friends and family.
